1940s Scotland. A young boy finds a mysterious egg while exploring one day. The egg hatches, revealing a water horse, a strange mythical creature that's the only one of its kind. The boy tries to hide its existence in the house, but the water horse gets into trouble with the nearby stationed soldiers. The water horse is moved to the lake, where it grows quickly, and eventually builds a legend of the Loch Ness monster.
